Biophilia Camp 2026

  • Regenerative Design

18–20 May | Kloster Neustift | South Tyrol, Italy

Reverence and Spirituality in Design

“What you want to ignite in others must first burn within yourself.” (St Augustinus)

A three-day immersive programme for practitioners exploring how human–nature relationships shape design, perception, and experience.

This is not a typical course.

The Biophilia Camp is an intensive, place-based learning experience that combines biophilic design theory, field observation, and collaborative design practice.

Working directly with the forests, meadows, and mountain landscapes of South Tyrol, participants explore how qualities such as reverence, attention, and connection can inform the way we design and build.

What This Programme Is (and Is Not)

This programme is designed for:

  • architects and designers
  • sustainability and climate professionals
  • consultants working with the built environment

It combines:

  • evidence-informed frameworks (Wilson, Kellert, Living Building Challenge)
  • guided outdoor exploration and observation
  • team-based design application

It is not a retreat, but a structured learning environment where experience is continuously translated into professional practice.

What You Will Experience

Over three days, participants will:

  • engage with core biophilic design principles and research
  • develop skills in observing and interpreting landscape conditions
  • explore how light, material, water, and spatial structure influence human experience
  • apply these insights through a collaborative design challenge
  • reflect on how to integrate these approaches into real-world projects

The programme moves between:

  • indoor sessions (frameworks, discussion)
  • outdoor work (observation, analysis, perception)
  • design studio (application and synthesis)

Programme Overview

Biophilia Camp 2026 is returning this May, hosted at the serene Kloster Neustift, nestled in South Tyrol’s vineyard-covered hills. This camp invites biophilic designers, thinkers, architects, climate and sustainability consultants (mixed experience levels).

Day Focus Sessions & Activities
Day 1 Foundations and Orientation Morning

Arrival, welcome, programme introduction. Overview of biophilia (Wilson, Kellert), Living Building Challenge.

Parallel Sessions:
• Biophilia fundamentals (emerging practitioners)
• Advanced perspectives: perception, meaning, spatial experience

Afternoon

(Outdoor Practice):
Guided landscape exploration (forest, meadow, terrain reading). Focus on sensory observation and environmental patterns.

Design Studio Launch:
Formation of teams and introduction of design challenge.

Evening:
Group reflection and integration into design thinking.

Day 2 Deepening and Design Application Morning

(Field + Input):
Water systems and natural processes as drivers of spatial experience.

Core Workshop:
• place-based design (ecology, geology, climate)
• material and sensory strategies
• spatial sequencing and thresholds
• proportion, pattern, coherence

Design Studio:
Application of principles to team projects.

Afternoon (Outdoor Practice):
Structured observation and attention-based methods.

Evening:
Historical and contemporary precedents of human–nature relationships.

Day 3 Integration and Professional Practice Morning:
Integrating biophilic design into practice:
• analytical and experiential approaches
• digital tools and embodied perception
• communicating experiential qualities

Creative + Reflective Work:
Translating insights into frameworks.

Design Studio Finalisation:
Preparation of team proposals.

Presentations & Feedback:
Team presentations and peer review.

Closing Session:
Synthesis of learning and next steps.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • strengthen their understanding of biophilic design theory and frameworks
  • develop place-based observation and analysis skills
  • gain practical tools for integrating biophilic strategies into projects
  • improve their ability to communicate experiential qualities in design
  • build connections with a network of practitioners working across disciplines

Approach

The programme is based on a simple principle:

Biophilic design is not only understood conceptually—it is learned through direct experience and reflection.

For this reason, the camp combines:

  • structured input (theory and case studies)
  • guided field practice (observation and attention)
  • design application (team-based work)

This integrated approach reflects established biophilic design principles, including the importance of repeated, multi-sensory engagement with nature.

Why Biophilia Camp 2026 is Different

The Camp doesn’t just explore biophilic design – it offers practising sacred space-making — rooted in place, guided by presence, and fueled by spiritual connection to the living world.

This is your invitation to slow down, reconnect, and remember what design is truly for.

The Location

The camp takes place in South Tyrol, in a setting that includes:

  • forest environments
  • open meadow landscapes
  • water systems

The diversity of landscapes allows participants to work with contrasting spatial conditions and understand how these influence perception and experience.

Watch a short video of the monastery and its breathtaking setting.

Who Should Attend

This programme is particularly relevant for:

  • architects and urban designers
  • landscape architects
  • sustainability and climate consultants
  • professionals working with regenerative or biophilic approaches

Both emerging and experienced practitioners are welcome.
The programme includes parallel sessions to accommodate different levels of familiarity.

Format

  • Duration: 3 days
  • Group size: limited (approx. 16–20 participants)
  • Structure: mix of input sessions, outdoor work, and design studio
  • Output: team-based design proposal + individual reflection

Why This Matters

As the built environment increasingly addresses climate and ecological challenges, there is a growing need to also address the quality of human–nature relationships.

Biophilic design offers a framework for this—but its application requires more than technical knowledge.

It requires:

  • attention
  • perception
  • and the ability to translate experience into design decisions

This programme is designed to support that shift.
