Seeing the Living World: Microscopy, Art, and the Intelligence of Living Systems

with Caro Arévalo

At the February Biophilic Society Gathering, we welcome Caro Arévalo.

Caro Arévalo is a Peruvian visual artist based in Woodstock, New York. Her work explores the plant and fungi kingdoms across scales — from field observation in nature to microscopic imaging. Beginning with research outdoors and continuing through microscopy, her process culminates in paintings that translate biological structures into visual narratives of interconnectedness.

Rooted in Amazonian heritage and ancestral knowledge, Caro’s practice reflects on the relationships between humans and other living beings, and on the ways attention, ritual, and observation shape how we understand the natural world.

In this session, Caro joins Carlo Battisti, President of Living Future Europe, for a conversation exploring how perception influences our relationship with nature and, consequently, how we design. Moving beyond biophilia as a formal or aesthetic strategy, the discussion will consider the role of observation, sensory awareness, and cultural knowledge in reconnecting people with living systems.

Through the lens of art, microscopy, and lived experience, the conversation will ask what designers might learn from learning to see again: how patterns, structures, and processes present in plants and fungi can inform a more relational understanding of the built environment, and how biophilia can evolve from representation toward relationship.
