Creating a Business Case for Regenerative Design explores how regenerative approaches in the built environment can move beyond sustainability compliance to become drivers of long-term financial, social, human, and ecological value. Developed as a joint initiative between Living Future Europe and Ramboll, the publication presents a research-based framework for understanding how regenerative design strategies can generate measurable returns while strengthening resilience, occupant well-being, and ecosystem health.
Drawing on international case studies including the Bullitt Center, the Kendeda Building, Prologis DC4, the Santa Monica City Services Building, and the PAE Living Building, the report examines how regenerative projects create and protect value through operational savings, lifecycle performance, reduced risk exposure, enhanced occupier experience, and nature-positive infrastructure. It also addresses critical implementation challenges such as split incentives, financing models, governance, and stakeholder alignment.
Developed through a collaborative research initiative graciously funded by the Ramboll Foundation, the publication introduces a five-part business case framework centred on Financial Value Creation, Financial Value Protection, Social Value Creation, Human Value Creation, and Nature Value Creation, offering practical guidance for developers, investors, public authorities, and design teams seeking to translate regenerative ambition into decision-relevant metrics and investable outcomes. By combining measured project performance with practitioner insight, the report contributes to the growing evidence base demonstrating that regenerative design is not only environmentally necessary, but commercially and strategically viable within evolving market and regulatory conditions.
