Creating the Financial Case for Regenerative Design
Bridging Finance, Design, and Long-Term Impact
The Creating the Financial Case for Regenerative Design project, led by Living Future Europe in collaboration with Ramboll and supported by the Ramboll Foundation, addresses a critical gap in the built environment: the lack of clear, credible financial evidence for regenerative practices. Moving beyond outdated “green building” narratives, the project develops a data-driven framework that articulates how regenerative design generates and protects value across financial, social, human, and environmental dimensions.
Drawing on market data, stakeholder insights, and real-world case studies—particularly Living Building Challenge-certified projects—the initiative identifies how regenerative approaches contribute to profitability, risk mitigation, resilience, and long-term performance. It reframes the business case not as a single economic argument, but as a multi-layered value proposition that responds to different stakeholders, time horizons, and market conditions.
By establishing an initial evidence base and strategic framework, the project supports more informed decision-making across design, development, and investment processes. Ultimately, it aims to accelerate the adoption of regenerative practices by demonstrating their relevance not only for sustainability goals, but for creating resilient, future-proof, and value-driven built environments.
