Biophilic design brings this concept into the built environment, intentionally incorporating natural elements like light, air, water, plants, and natural materials to create spaces that nurture this connection. The term reflects the International Living Future Institute’s goal to create environments that function like natural ecosystems—self-sustaining, interconnected, and resilient. The Living Building Challenge aims to create buildings that harmonize with nature, generating more energy than they use, capturing and treating all water on site, and created with healthy materials. Zero Energy Certified buildings have best in class energy efficiency improvements of 60-90% over baseline. Zero Carbon Certified buildings go beyond energy use and aim to improve both operational and embodied energy decarbonisation.

The use of unhealthy and ecologically irresponsible materials is standard practice in the building industry. The Living Future Institute offers several key programs related to materials in the built environment, emphasizing health, transparency, and ecological responsibility. As we spend more and more time indoors, improving the status quo is urgent for protecting the health of building occupants.

The Living Product Challenge is a framework which encourages manufacturers to make products contribute more to the environment and society than they take at all stages of the product life cycle. Declare is a “nutrition label” for building materials with aims to help consumers make informed choices about healthier more sustainable products through easy to understand ingredient transparency. The Red List identifies the most harmful chemicals commonly found in building materials, driving industry innovation towards safer and more ecological responsible alternatives.
