Masterclass Progress: What is Regenerative Design?

The Living Future Europe (LFE) 2024 Masterclass is in full swing, offering an exploration into the intricacies of regenerative design. The Masterclass presents a carefully curated curriculum designed to challenge conventional narratives and inspire innovative solutions. Through expert-led discussions, interactive exercises, and real-world case studies, participants are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to drive progress within the sustainability agenda and resilience imperative.

With 10 live sessions spanning from February to April 2024, participants are immersed in a transformative learning experience that addresses the ‘why’, ‘what’, and ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.  Our first phase, addressing the ‘why’ of regenerative design is now complete, with three sessions available as recordings to watch at your own convenience. Here is a recap of what we’ve learned so far:

Phase One: Exploring the ‘Why’ of Regenerative Design

Our journey began with a series of captivating sessions that dove into the essence of regenerative principles and its transformative potential. In our innaugural module, led by Martin Brown, we spoke of transcending carbon-centric viewpoints and embracing the multifaceted nature of regenerative design. The concept of humility and curiosity in problem-solving emerged as crucial elements, emphasizing the importance of seeing connections between different parts.

Insights on Ecological Worldviews and Complexity

Emmanuel Pauwels further contextualized these concepts by highlighting the differences between mechanical and ecological worldviews. He underscored the limitations of reductionism and the detrimental effects of simplifying complex problems, urging us to adopt a holistic approach in understanding systems.

Practical Tools for Implementation

In parallel, Christina Larcher and Michael Bruse provided concrete tools to implement regenerative thinking in practice. Christina introduced Agile Management principles, emphasizing emotional intelligence and effective communication in dealing with complexity – closely paralleling the regenerative principles of holistic thinking. Meanwhile, Michael demonstrated the importance in micro-modeling tools, offering insights into understanding the relationships among components and the value of  viewing a problem from different scales and perspectives.

Real-world Examples and Application

Our trainers Ludovic Pittie, Lorna Gribbin, and Loredana Stasisin enriched our learning experience with real-world examples of projects implementing Nature Positive design and principles of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative. These examples provided tangible illustrations of regenerative principles in action, reinforcing our understanding and inspiring further exploration.

What’s Next

In the coming weeks we are looking forward to presenting the “What” section of the Masterclass. Here, we will embark on a detailed exploration of the Living Building Challenge Petals, unraveling sustainable building practices essential for our journey in regenerative design. These sessions promise invaluable insights and are offered free of charge, ensuring accessibility for all who seek to deepen their understanding of sustainable design practices.

If you missed any of the previous sessions, it’s not to late to register! Recordings are available, allowing you to catch up at your convenience. Whether you’re an architect, planner, or simply passionate about creating a more sustainable future, join us as we continue our quest towards regenerative excellence.
