Celebrating Earth Day: Our Shared History

As we gear up to celebrate Earth Day 2024, it’s a great time to reflect on the shared history between Earth Day and the International Living Future Institute found in Denis Hayes and how it has shaped our progress.

Denis Hayes is known to be the principal organizer of the inaugural Earth Day in 1970. Now, his is a name synonymous with the environmental movement. His vision and dedication to the cause have laid the groundwork for what has now become the most widely observed secular holiday globally. But his contribution extends far beyond the inception of Earth Day. As President of the Bullitt Foundation since 1992, he continues to champion ecological principles, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Under his leadership, the Bullitt Foundation is pioneering sustainable building practices, such as by the ambitious Bullitt Center project in Seattle.

The Bullitt Center is certified under the Living Building Challenge, the most stringent building sustainability standard in the world. To achieve this certification, the building met rigorous criteria related to energy, water, materials, equity, and beauty. Among these requirements are the standards for healthy materials and high indoor air quality. The building does not contain “Red List” hazardous materials, including PVC, cadmium, lead, mercury and hormone-mimicking substances, all of which are commonly found in building components.

The theme of this year’s Earth Day is “Planet vs Plastics” and it finds easy alignment with Living Future Europe and the ILFI programs. ILFI’s Material Red List plays a crucial role in this effort by identifying and eliminating hazardous materials, including many plastics, from the built environment, thereby promoting healthier and more environmentally responsible construction practices. Through initiatives like the Living Building Challenge, ILFI empowers architects, designers, and manufacturers to prioritize the use of non-toxic, sustainable materials, contributing to a world where the health of our planet is prioritized over the convenience of single-use plastics.

“All this plastic was produced by a petrochemical industry with an abysmal record of toxic emissions, spills, and explosions.”

DENIS HAYES, Earth Day Chair Emeritus (Planet vs. Plastics)

The Living Building Challenge emphasizes regenerative design principles, mirroring Hayes’s vision of resilient human ecosystems. The Bullitt Center’s pursuit of this challenge exemplifies a holistic approach to building design, where energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation converge to redefine the built environment’s impact on the planet.

For this year’s event, Earth Day 2024, Living Future Europe is proud to invite you to join our final Masterclass session on Living Building Challenge Project Management and EU/UK Regulations. The class will be an exploration of integrative design processes and policy frameworks driving sustainable development. Participants will be introduced to the intricacies of designing a Living Building while navigating the regulatory landscape of the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Join us on April 24th, 2024, at 5:00 PM CET for a two-hour session featuring Emmanuel Pauwels of Green Living Projects and Emmanuelle Maire from the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newcomer to sustainable design, this masterclass offers invaluable insights into shaping a greener future.
